#SHAPE MAGIC PROGRAM TRIAL#
It is important that both mixtures have the same elastic modulus, and the amount of material added apparently took some trial and error. Once cured, a laser cutter creates a channel for the active part of the shape, which is cast using the magnetic rubber material. Then they cast the passive part of the shape using the rubber/aluminum mix. They create a mold for the part they want to make - a great use for a 3D printer.

They mix aluminum granules with some of the rubber and neodymium-iron-boron particles with the remainder. The researchers used a silicone rubber known as Ecoflex.

The math tells you what profile you need and the magnetic field required to actuate it. For example, one of the test objects curled a beam into a semi-circle using 100 distinct shapes over time. The math part is determining the magnetization profile required for the shape change required.
#SHAPE MAGIC PROGRAM FULL#
The paper is full of math, but the basic idea is simple. The method is reproducible and doesn’t seem out of reach for a hackerspace or well-equipped garage lab. and researchers at several institutions have found a way to make rapidly changing silicone rubber parts (PDF link) that can change shape due to a magnetic field. They also are frequently not very fast to change shape. However, most research in this area has relied on human intuition and trial and error to get the programmed shape correct. Researchers have been studying shape-programmable matter: materials that can change shape based on something like heat or magnetic field. For example, if you were used to the command + spacebar key combination for searching, you could program the Internet Search function to use that combination. How could you build an artificial tadpole? Or simulate the motion of a cilium? Those would be hard to do with mechanical means - even micromechanical because of their fluid motion. Users are allowed to enable or disable any combination of the shapes and specify key combinations for the different functions that Shape Magic offers.
#SHAPE MAGIC PROGRAM MAC OS#
These functions integrate with Mac OS seamlessly and are customizable to your personal preferences. And, the circle allows users to take screenshots and save them to a specified location or to the clipboard. The square exposes a user’s desktop by hiding all the visible applications. Upon selecting the shape, a spotlight-like search box appears for your search terms to be entered. Within the preferences of Shape Magic, users can select the search engines and websites in which to search. The Diamond holds the Internet Search function. Shape Magic is a menu bar utility that features three shapes – diamond, square and circle – that each illustrate a utility function. But, I recently acquired Shape Magic, which incorporates three utility functions – Internet searching, taking screenshots and hiding apps – into one app.

Most of my current menu bar utilities only feature one task. They make us more productive and help us complete our normal daily computer tasks much quicker and easier. In this ‘everything is better as long as it’s faster’ world, menu bar utilities are among some of the most popular apps downloaded. Shape Magic gives users three utilities in one.
